"texas-based electronic music producer phillip washington aka cygnus was on bit of a hiatus since his phenomenal -cosmos- long play on fundamental records, released near the end of 2016. with this ep, titled -ne0 ge0-, he s breaking the silence and we re extremely happy to see it happening through barba imprint. the record consists of 4 cuts; -zone shifting-, -vertexing-, -ne0-ge0- and -astronoot- which all share common qualities of his previous work - deep, spacey, richly textured and really well crafted. -zone shifting- is what electro in 2018 should sound like. deep, emotional and futuristic but well grounded in the human condition through the vocal line which seems to haunt from the distance. -vertexing- is a slightly more paced, moodier affair with slow enveloping vangelis-esque synth lines bleeding all over traditional electro sounding beat. however, in this case that s exactly what s needed. title track, -ne0-ge0- is the first one on the flip side and the busiest one. creasing of multiple synth lines and pads is done in such an expertly elegant manner that you just can t resist but play it loud on a big soundsystem and see what it does to the dancefloor. and finally, record closes with -astronoot-, and as b2 tracks usually are - it s the deepest of them all, reserved for those heady moments when you need something to bring the magic to the next level."

alphabets is the new baby project supported by the all mighty chez damier . elements 01 introduces the project with a series of 5 tracks curated for all dancefloors hours. alphabets is a house project coming from south east berlin and run by a french man and other audio signals. me, them and their associates are really starting to enjoy our relationships and have a plan to try and share a little series of different tracks that could represent the vibe i ve enjoyed sharing when all under one roof, dancing on the same beat. it s slightly underground, hopefully.

for this ep, jófríður Ákadóttir has re-recorded some of the finest songs from her bands and solo-projects (jfdr, samaris, pascal pinon) with new string arrangements. these versions have a simple, inherent beauty that is juxtaposed with their seething, stark intensity.
to replace the original arrangements with strings was originally planned as a one-off event: when preparing a pascal pinon performance in portugal, jófríður asked nyc-based composer ian davis to help her re-arrange four tracks. after the show jófríður realized that the material deserved to be captured.

afro was our first international release, and our first attempt to bring afro-peruvian music up to date in the same way as nicomedes santa cruz and others did decades ago when the fragile existence of this music was fading. we were very satisfied with the result, which is raw and acoustic but at the same time electronic. dark but soulful. deep and haunting at times. we are joined on this album by some of the finest afro-peruvian musicians on cajon, guitar and vocals giving every song a live feel and the album includes additional production on all tracks by nitin sawhney s and da lata s studio wizard toni economides.

matt edwards and multifaceted artist patrick mason team up as srvd with debut release entitled elevate dropping on rekids this august. whether as radio slave or his various other monikers, matt edwards is one of electronic musics most consistent and innovative artists. ever since his early reinterpretations of kylie minogue and new order, edwards has continually commanded respect as a producer and in-demand remixer, whilst as a label owner his rekids imprint is undoubtedly one of house and techno’s most influential platforms. meanwhile, patrick mason continues to conquer the fashion world, a devout club kid and gifted creative turning heads as an outstanding art director, illustrator and model, whose extensive artistic talents include a unique and compelling voice destined for dancefloors. srvds story begins when the pair met in panorama bar, which soon led to edwards and mason hanging out at the studio and later evolved into improvised performances in berlins club scene and beyond. elevate perfectly captures the raw spirit and vibe of their live show, with whispering vocals ushering in precision kicks and piercing stabs until masons mesmerising voice comes fully into play. an homage to the new york vogue scene and a huge hit at panorama bar - where the pair have set the house on fire with three unannounced shows so far this year nasty is a syncopated, bass-driven monster of a cut complete with infectious claps and metallic effects.

you may remember the closing of space, ibiza with carl cox when he played a bootleg of total confusion. barry obzee hobbs (rising high a&r) spent a lot of time trying to locate the remixer and finally did a few months ago. we have now signed the remix which will be released on vinyl in may and on digital in july. the story goes like this: carl cox has been playing the version at most of his shows including tomorrow land, kappa future fest and timewarp ( see video clip below) but this is where the story becomes more interesting. the remixer, rod malmok from rotterdam aka benny rodriguez, who is a very established dj producer playing for loco dice in ibiza etc and releasing on ben klock s imprint klockwork, chris liebings imprint clr, adam beyers imprint drumcode and many more was inspired to remix the track through a conversation with dubfire, rod gave him a rough copy the following day. he played it to carl cox at space, ibiza and cox begged him for a copy - see video below if you ve been around the scene for a while you will know that rising high records was one of the first labels to shape techno, hardcore and breakbeat in the uk and was huge!

crazy 12 track library music style album on this ace italian label. all based around bumping live rhythms triggering an obscure japanese drum synth module recorded in 2018. it was november 2017 when i received a call from an old friend, hi fabrizio, i found a rare japanese drum machine, you should come and see it before i put this on ebay. i went to check it out and immediately realized it had more potential than just drum sounds generation, it was able to produce quirky and creepy sounds if triggered by any sound source. so i bought it and brought in the studio, where me and alex were laying down new beats and ideas. it took just three days of jams to get the skeleton of this record done: i programmed the module to receive alex s drum hits and the device started creating synth lines, almost as it was speaking its own language.i ve found a soul in this machine, and i wanted to bring it to life in these tracks, a mix of arranged compositions and improvised jams. no root keys, no grids, no clicks, everything came out in an instinctive and natural way as far as we know it s the first time this synthesizer/drum machine is been used in this improper and new way.

when i first stumbled across mix tapes out of hamburgs seminal front club (with klaus stockhausen and boris dlugosch at the helm) during the glorious and carefree early days of the popularized internet, there were certain tracks on them that struck a chord. in fact there was one specifically, i couldnt stop listening to. the mixture of an infectious bass line, a super sharp snare, music and harmony vocal snippets, happy claps and synths lines that evoked pictures of a convertible going down a coastline, and - to top it all off - a tribal chant, was irresistible. after some intensive track-id-hunting pre-shazam, i found out that the heaven-sent hymn was music by an act called syncbeat. originally released in 1984 during the craze that was called uk electro via street sounds resp. streetwave and later licensed to german omnivore zyx records. a joint venture between the electro-funk mastermind,dj pioneer and edit maestro greg wilson as well as manchester musicians martin jackson & andy connell, it is exactly that type of dance track that eludes any classification - as you can see from my description above. or to cite greg wilson himself from one of his essays on the subject of uk electro: the track that received the best response was music by syncbeat, which was full of good vibes and could have easily been re-vamped down the line as a house track.

umeko ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from japan. she was a representative of the ainu culture on the hokkaido island in the north of japan. “ihunke” is her first album which was recorded with the ainu musician and dub producer oki kano in 2000. it was released on cd in japan only and is finally available on vinyl (2lp + linernotes, dl included). “ihunke” is following last year’s single “iuta upopo” pingipung 58, incl. m.rux remix which had been received with overwhelming enthusiasm and was quickly sold out. the 16 ainu songs on “ihunke” are delicate, natural gems. they are built on oki kano’s tonkori patterns (a 5-string harp), over which umeko ando develops her repetitive, mantric vocals, often in a call-response manner. oki kano is one of very few professional tonkori players who performs worldwide with his oki dub ainu band. the songs possess a mystical energy – when crows call accurately with ando’s brittle voice in the first song, it seems like natural powers join in with her music. her voice sounds like animals of the sky and the forest. oki kano: “it was a lot of fun to record with umeko ando. many ainu hesitate to break from tradition - if umeko hadn’t been so flexible to work with the younger generation and recording technology, this album would never have happened. our sessions were intense, and we were proud and happy about making such beautiful music.” upcoming in autumn: remixes of “ihunke” by tolouse lowtrax, m.rux, dj ground, el buho mark peters, gama, andi otto, and dreems. historical background: only recently (in 2008) have the ainu officially been acknowledged as indigenous people who are culturally independent from japan. this record is an example of how their music has been passed on through generations in the underground ainu communities while it was oppressed by the japanese hegemony. it deserves a huge audience. follow kompakt

hailing from italy, different ways is the new label run by atimpuri. the first release is signed by one of the most influent duos of the italian dance scene, tengrams. “fractured textures” is a mini album composed of 6 tracks which are an excursion of tengrams talent when it comes to electronic music. once again, the duo managed to express their art combining tracks of different styles into a unique journey. a not to be missed record for your collection!

next up on nang it is time for a slice of spot-on male vocal house and disco. liverpool based thomas lang made some fine albums in the 80s and 90s with john murphy (who went on to carve a highly successful career in movie tracks) and david hughes. somewhere in between that and a string of recent albums (“torch songs” and “the german alphabet”) he also managed to buy one of the finest recording studios in north west england, parr street studios (the “abbey road of the north”). we are pleased here at nang to see a new avenue turned in tom’s life, his first foray into the dance world. “scared” was written with late liverpool songwriter john uriel quite some time ago. it first emerged as a b-side to tom’s comeback single “august day” in 2011. here at nang we always loved the smooth and sophisticated vocal and melody. when tom suggested some remixes we were on board.

anyone who has followed the dj sets of adam beyer or dutch ally bart skils, would be familiar with the stirring vocal and thundering impact of your mind . while the track begun as a tool, the reactions when tested out were so momentous they decided to turn it into a full track. together they teamed up to add more percussion, snares and a rolling acid line to complete its transformation. the result? one of 2018 s most powerful techno weapons highlighting time warp, awakenings and ultra music festival, to name just a few.

(clear 10 inch vinyl) the second release to be pressed into totems slabs of 10-inch vinyl is from techno impresario luke slaters l.b. dub corp moniker. slater has been operating as a pioneer, with a full deck of aliases, throughout the genres many corners since the days when techno was a newborn phenomenon. the stripped back sounds of l.b. dub corps last releases on the imprint have resounded naturally within the psychotropic space carved out by stroboscopic artefacts.

official repress on 12inch of these sought after charly kingson tunes. the label says: charly kingson, (ps. for charlie kingue soppo) is a legend of afro-funk who managed to shake the entire continent up with his infamous 1978 lp, born in africa. often forgotten when conversations turn to afro-dance, and the likes of tony allen or fela kuti, he has been an incredible source of inspiration to many musicians exploring the funkier side of jazz-dance, and this album itself goes way beyond any traditional notion of tropical discotheque. -born in african- itself is a funky groover for the dancefloor and here is the original 1982 remix, made by dutch legendary percussionist eddie conard available again, featuring nimele bolo on the flip-side. released in 1982 on ariola/fleet, but also pressed on the original fleet label. the latter (remarkably with identical catalog-number) never saw daylight. but, we got them all! all in all, this hard to find 12 inch (at discogs copies on the ariola/fleet label go for around 250 euro) was recently re-discovered, and now you can finally enjoy it again

superb, heartwarming and spirit lifting gospel disco modern soul 45 first released in 1978 on philadelphia united records. calvin carr & company are enriched with sensitivity and alive with the spirit. the kind of gospel that sweeps all over you and runs through your veins. there is always a sense of inadequacy when attempting to describe just how good something is. words like exciting, inspiring and original come to mind but as always you will have to decide for yourself

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

it is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis, the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era. le renard bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between lafawndah and composer midori takada, and filmmakers partel oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. as transmitted by takada, the fox appears in both ancient senegalese and japanese folktales as the trickster archetype, belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature.

4th tilly jam with four deep disco / house slammer
folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

firmly imprinting their legacy, amoss & fre4knc present watermark volume 1, the first in a series of devastating collaborative releases. on their own superb, but when producing together, amoss & fre4knc are another beast altogether, an entity capable of untold chaos, with a proven track record. a naturally formed pairing of two minds intricately in sync, the watermark series represents an outlet for the amoss & fre4knc sound.

jesse futerman and his ornate personality are most comfortable when collaborating and highlighting the best in people. waterzone is the sound of such experiences. the talent of stacey shopsowitz (bass), chris edmondson (saxophone) and beverly glenn-copeland (voice), are introduced in turn, as if by spotlight, on -vista-, while futerman takes back stage to lay out the foundation.

this month we have what is the start of a string of previously unreleased bangers from the soul, funk and disco legend bobby boyd, we have been working on this for a long time and really proud to be working alongside bobby representing him. first up we have love goddess, a floaty driving disco soul number thats bound to get some spins by the northern boys as well as deep disco heads, i know its been doing this business when i play it, on the flip and classic horn driven funky soul in bobbys classic style and solid songwriting, essential. if your not a rare soul or disco collector bobby s name might not be a name your familiar with but as one of the founder members of lafayette afro rock band you will have experienced his music and influence which is far reaching.

what do you get when you cross a frenchman, a dane, two irishmen and a swede? the debut various artists compilation from kyoku records, of course. gathering the producers who make up their whole discography thus far, the melbourne-based imprint are welcoming back dorsi plantar, sune, long island sound and ethyene (alongside folamour and marc bianco). translating from japanese to a befitting -dancing birds-, the odoru tori ep is revitalizing the elegant origami series for one last spin. the orizuru, hachidori, oumu and hakucho, that is, the paper crane, the hummingbird, the parrot and the swan are bringing the handmade array to a suitable conclusion. on the a side, the scandinavian connection is responsible for bringing some summer heat. dorsi plantar sheds his usual wistfulness for a slightly moodier, more functional track with -senorita lolita-, although still incorporating some of that playful sampling he s now come to be known for. -californicate- from sune takes a more laidback approach and channels the breezy and carefree atmosphere of the coastal golden state. on the flip side, long island sound follow the same recipe that made -delusions- such a big hit with the intricate sampling and eloquent arrangement of -ease in-. to top things off, ethyene, with the help of folamour and marc bianco, close out the record with a groovy, vocal number that sees them employ their signature french touch formula to great effect on the simply titled -good-.

label head steven rutter joins forces with john shima (fs005) on this bright ep with its direction turned towards the light. the heavenly ‘skywards’ leads the way upwards with tenderly treated spacious drum programming and light-as-air atmospherics while darker and deeper cavernous tones create the yin-yang balance of lightness and dark. ‘broken spell’ continues the uplifted vibe of a spell that when broken, blooms open with an intoxicating permeating sweetness like an exotic fragrance that lingers in one’s memory. ‘a new day’ leans slightly more towards a heavier driven track featuring a funky bassline with bright electronic notations as counterpoint while drifting, dreamy pads keep the overall mood airy and light. the off-kilter knob is turned way right on the bouncy final track ’disjointed route’, injecting dashes of wry quirk alongside a lightly moving groove.

after a ten year long career releasing music with many different labels icicle has taken the logical next step and started his own imprint, entitled entropy music. the name derived from his second album ‘entropy’ still aims to inspire the concept that music behaves as all things do in nature and degrades, falls apart and becomes more chaotic with time. in an effort to confront this, entropy music strives to bring controlled, rolling, technically detailed music, without ever overstepping that line when the process becomes inhuman and cold. on this second release on entropy music icicle teams up with kindred spirit and cousin proxima to deliver a four track collaborative ep. the opening track which also welcomes ben verse to the label, is rolling tech funk pur sang. the weighty and detailed yet simple breathing groove make it a track true to the entropy ethos and ben complements this with his trademark lyrics reminiscent of renegade hardware shows past. on the a2. icicle brings a near wooden stepper with a viscous turbulent low-end, a firm wink to the past, with dust me off. icicle’s track is expertly offset by proxima’s solo offering retrace a peak into futurism boasting an evolved playful groove which takes on board equal measures of jump up and 90’s tech. the ep is rounded up by the title track deep dreaming, where icicle and proxima collaborate once more to bring a slight curve-ball. pianos ring in an eerie musical intro to a dark but sultry track where the energy is second to the atmosphere.

harlem s legendary disco label queen constance has long been a cult favourite among fans of underground dance music for decades. one of many labels operating under the equally legendary p&p family of imprints queen constance was operated by one peter brown, a truly colossal figure in nyc s music scene, it s catalogue still fascinates music lovers to this day. covering a wide range of styles including gospel, early rap and disco the label s output continually finds it way into the playlists of respected dj s and selectors across the globe. high fidelity will be the first in a series of queen constance rarities to be reissued, an extremely rare and coveted record that can change hands on the second hand market for big big money, avoid those low rent bootlegs that are out there and cop this fully licensed repress. the group s self-titled sole long-player is a fantastic 6 track set of gritty, soulful and uplifting funky disco with a diy edge. not too much is known about the artists themselves, or even when the record was performed, recorded or released but it certainly sounds like a group who knew their craft inside out. the energy is high across the record and the group sound like they re on fire, just check the outrageously funkified magic carpet and you ll see what we mean. amazing. the whole project has that enchanting lo-fi, back-street feel to it in terms of production and the mind boggles as to how such a record would have come off had it been recorded at a motown or any other big studio, but no matter as this release is perfect the way it is, an essential piece of street-level nyc disco straight from the underground.

fernando sanz has been steadfastly dedicated to the craft of beats and breaks since he was a young sprout of 14 years in the sun baked southern spanish port city of algeciras. under the imprint orbe records, sanz has cultivated his own thriving techno community as artist and label head. since 2014 orbe records has been lashing the block rocking techno of sanz’s comrades eduardo de la calle and steve stoll, but mostly of sanz’s own prolific moniker, orbe. as dj and producer orbe keeps the mood surreal and dreamy while deploying understated drum machine patterns to hammer the platonic solids that keep his beloved community in tact. his forthcoming 3-track “hohenheim” ep for the barcelona label, lone romantic, keeps the orbe buzz rolling. “hohenheim” kicks the record into motion with the resounding thuds of a multilayered big-room kick while bright synths and sharp edged sci-fi machinery climb the walls in obscure and narcotic patterns. “shimano’s tribute” is a study in the fundaments of techno that lull the listener with an extended 4x4 intro into a state of high mental absorption, just in time to drop the centre piece of the track, an eloquently ovular stutter sliced percussion sample. “edelweiss” sets the record on a outward course for somewhere between the hypnotic dance floor bliss of a pre-dawn sunday morning and the impending angst beholden to glimpsing the dystopian sprawl of civilisation when flying out monday morning.

the alishan forest railway is a 86 km network of narrow-gauge railways running through the forests of alishan mountain in chiayi county, taiwan. during the spring months, the iconic red train passes through an endless array of cherry blossoms and small, untouched villages. this peaceful scene is set in contrast to the stories told by locals, of wandering spirits seen deep in the forest. the spirits are believed to be the lost souls of the 32 passengers, who perished in the tragic derailment of the train in 1981. burn a candle in remembrance when you play this record at the club.
